Oberweis calls on Durbin to return money from IRS union SUGAR GROVE — U.S. Senate candidate Jim Oberweis called on opponent Dick Durbin to return $11,000 in campaign donations from the union that represents IRS employees. Oberweis said the campaign donations could be one reason Durbin refuses to state whether he favors a special prosecutor for the IRS scandal. Durbin has also refused to reveal whether he corresponded with disgraced former IRS official Lois Lerner or other IRS officials in the midst of the scandal. “Maybe we now know why Dick Durbin won’t talk about the IRS scandal. He has a union to protect,” Oberweis said. Durbin has taken $11,000 in campaign donations from the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) PAC, which represents many IRS workers. Those donations were: $2,500 on 7/14/08 $1,000 on 6/27/07 $2,000 on 6/26/02 $500 on 12/21/01 $5,000 on 6/7/01 In addition, since 2008, the NTEU PAC has given the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee $110,000. The union PAC is an enormous donation engine for Democrat candidates. The National Review said last year it had donated $1.63 million to candidates, more than 96 percent Democrats. Oberweis has continually asked Durbin to respond to questions regarding the IRS because he played an integral role in setting the tone for the scandal. Durbin bragged in 2010 that he had written a letter asking the agency to scrutinize a conservative organization. He made no such requests regarding liberal organizations. “Sometime before this campaign is over, we will get answers from Dick Durbin about the illegal targeting of American citizens by the IRS,” Oberweis said. “He can’t duck and hide forever.”
