Obesity being described as a disease always caused a lot of debate. However, in a landmark case this week, obese people can now be considered disabled. The European Court of Justice ruled that if someones level of obesity hinders the full and effective participation of that person in professional life on an equal basis with other workers, then obesity can fall within the concept of disability. This has potential ramifications because it means employers must make exceptions on a case by case basis. This could result in implementation of things like wider seats or designated car parking spaces. Jane DeVille Almond, The chairwoman of the British Obesity Society said I think the downside would be that if employers suddenly have to start ensuring that theyve got wider seats, larger tables, more parking spaces for people who are obese, I think then were just making the situation worse. What do you think?
