Obituary for Mr. Horace "Tripp" Hines Jr. Horace H. “Tripp” Hines, Jr., 65, of Smithfield, VA, formerly of Chesterfield County, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013. A native of Boykins, VA, he served in the U. S. Navy Construction Battalion “Seabees” during the Vietnam War and was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. After returning from his second tour in Vietnam, he started the first of many companies, beginning with excavation and progressing to homebuilding for the rest of his career. Mr. Hines was active in community service efforts as well as civic and youth organizations. He was a member of the Downing Ruritan Club and was also active in scouting, serving as leader of the Indian Guides and Boy Scout Troop at Providence United Methodist Church. He loved playing with his grandchildren and living at the river. He enjoyed sharing his many loves with family and friends, including exploring the back roads of the mountains on his Harley with his co-pilot of 45 years and ending his day watching the sunset over the river with a glass of wine. “Tripp was always ready with good advice and a genuine hug.” He was preceded in death by a son, Bret O. Hines. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth F. Hines; son, Keith L. Hines; daughter, Meade Hines Craun; grandchildren, Hunter Q. Hines, Casey H. Craun, Avery Francis Craun; sisters, Susan H. Hice, Andrea H. Collins; and brother, S. Todd Hines. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, August 10th at the Chester Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Providence United Methodist Church, 901 South Providence Road, Richmond, VA 23236. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CPT Bret O. Hines Memorial Scholarship Fund at UVA. Check should be made payable to The UVA Fund with memo of “CPT Bret O.
