Obi’s Culturama-40 Review gets a B-minus! Here is how I graded it. I will start with the good things first. In terms of the shows (I wasn’t able to attend all but I asked people’s opinions on them). The Mr Kool/Swimwear show was probably the show of the entire season so that gets an A. The Opening, Talented Youth, Food Fair and Kaiso Shows were good so I give them B’s. Speaking of Kaiso Show I am happy that Dis N Dat won the car for Culturama 40 as no one is more deserving than him after singing for 39 yrs straight. Jouvert morning was massive with lots of people and Kore Band and the Long Jam posse rule the road. It’s a pity the band couldn’t get to the judging points otherwise they would have easily captured the road march. Do you all think it may be time for a roaming judge to capture the band doing the Long Jam? By the way good to see they listen to Obi’s appeal from last year and this year that Town must not be closed down for Herberts as I believe both could co-exist and look how beautiful it all worked out this year? I keep telling you all Obi knows what he is talking about but ‘aryou playing harden and refuse to listen’ anyway I give Jouvert a B. Parade of troupe seems to be one of the best in a long time and Obi had a blast. At first I was kind of skeptical about the change in the route but it actually worked out well and was impress with all the young people playing mas so I give the parade a B+. I like the added VVIP section which gives the Complex some added ambiance and the reviews have been all good. I like that multiple liming events were taking place with the Village, Herberts Beach, Bull Pen, Lime Bar and Happy Endings, people had choices. Now here are some of the things that didn’t live up to par. The International Night show was rather lame and disappointing. It started way too late, the acts were boring and the main act was a no-show after people paid 90 bucks, so I give it a D. Although there was a passing Tropical Storm which led to the cancellation of the controversial band clash it was a little surprising that there no contingency plans to atleast held the show in the morning of the next day so I give that a C- for lack of planning even though they knew in advance the storm would be passing. The Queen Show even though it was ram-pack with people was a big time let down so it gets a C-. The Kaiso show MCs, Pink Panther and Skatie (why the fascination with this no name kaisonian who never come king in T&T I don’t know) whom they brought in from Trinidad was a total and complete waste of time and money. Listening to them on stage was like watching French Weed grow…boring as heck, so they got a D+. Dumping Kassanova at the last minute to bring in a St. Kitts band which didn’t sound all that good was a bad move and I glad some ended up with a big buss instead of the car, that move got an F. The Village lime was basically lame as none of the bands were impressive when they played in there so that got a C. The shows are still way too long (Queen finished at 3 am) and most if not all started late. I have always said there need to be some kind of dress rehearsal done for these shows to make them better and tighten them up. Hopefully some of these things can be improved for ‘C-41’. I ask this in closing, are we witnessing the slow death of the word Culturama which has been replaced with C?
