Obviously I love fall festivities...the gorgeous leaves that crunch under our feet, harvest time...apples & pumpkins, the crisp weather, hayrides, etc. and that does not necessarily have to be clumped in with Halloween. Halloween has pagan roots and this is what I have issue with...the dark side of it and the celebration of evil associated with it...gore, blood, guts, zombies, violence, death, evil spirits. Wait...arent we as Christians children of light and life? When my kids were younger and didnt ask questions, there was no problem...we kept it fun and lighthearted; we dressed up and trick or treated and did it all. All was great. But as they get older and wiser and start asking why we celebrate Halloween, I have to reevaluate my whole way of thinking. I love what your church is doing, Megan Casey Kessler with the belly of the whale, and all the others who had input about how we can point people to Christ, even on a pagan holiday. I think as Christians, we need to be intentional about these opportunities (and every day) to share the light of Christ with everyone. Our Halloween has to look different from the worlds. This night can be redeemed and used to share light, life, and hope...but not unless we are intentional about it. Ive always been one who asks lots of questions and I like to go against the flow...lol! Im really not trying to be judgmental, and I dont think anyone is going to hell because they trick or treat :-). So, as you go about your Halloween activities tomorrow, think about how you are or arent using this as an opportunity to share Christs light and hope with a very lost world. I love you all. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Eph 6:12. Be strong in The Lord and in His mighty power!!!
