Obviously I wasnt depressed enough last night watching WIT, so I had to top it off with A NORMAL HEART about the early days of the fight against AIDS, when it was that gay disease. And I find that even after 30 years, Im still so angry. I didnt lose as many as my friends did, but I lost patients. I watched families desert their dying sons and daughters.I watched our government treat the disease as a just punishment. Amazing how we can talk ourselves out of righting wrongs because, you know, it only happens to people who deserve it. All I know is that every patient I ever cared for with hemophilia is dead because nobody cared about the blood supply. Patients couldnt be treated because hospitals wouldnt take them or buried because mortuaries wouldnt take them. My brothers friend, who was a multiply decorated in Vietnam medic died with only my family two hundred miles away and his mother left in his life, because his ex-wife took their children away and taught them to hate him. The way I learned it, the people who hate will be the ones who go to hell. Not anybody I cared for who was deserted and shunned and spit on. May God forgive us for what we did then and how we treat the vulnerable now.
