Obviously like Mardi Gras Krewes the Mummers have a complicated history when it comes to racial sensitivity, but like the Krewes I am absolutely infatuated with the idea. I love the idea of city dwellers taking back the streets, however briefly, from cars. I love public satire and performance and I love how these organizations provide a social and creative outlet in what are often working class areas that have few. It really saddens me that the Mummers seem to be struggling.
