Occasionally I hear from people who say they’re going to unplug their Facebook—or other social media—because it’s filled with profane, trivial, gossip, hate mongering, or is just a big waste of their time. OK, I respect that, Facebook certainly isn’t for everyone, I get that. But here’s what Facebook is for me. It’s a big, daily reunion—a reunion of friends and family. It’s a forum, where I can dialogue with lots of people over various topics, trends, and events. It’s a place where people I care about bring their prayer requests, their hurts, their asking for help. It’s a bulletin board with new music available to hear and check out. It’s poetry, it’s philosophy, it’s artistry, it’s memories, it’s turning on the porch light and saying, “Hi, come on in—let’s talk.” Yeah, yeah, I know: I’ll get responses from people saying, “You are so blind/naïve/careless/ too tolerant of trashy talk/trivial/too intense/irreverent/too religious” etc., whatever. But I’m here, and like Springsteen said: I want a thousand guitars. I want pounding drums. I want a million different voices….. This is radio nowhere. Is there anybody alive out there?
