Occasionally you may experience spiritual dry spells, which can be precipitated by loss of a loved one, a personal defeat or crisis, or a number of adverse circumstances. During those comfortable, barren times, it often becomes difficult to pray. God may seem like a vague idea to you rather than a living reality. It is comforting to bear in mind that this is not an unusual occurrence. Many of the heroes of the faith have experienced the same loss of direction and have had their faith tested. Even the psalmist David was afflicted by notorious depressions brought on by treachery, betrayal, adversaries, and his own sins. The important thing is not to give up. You must persist in prayer. Faith and vitality will return. God does not forsake you. Why am I discouraged? Why so sad? I will put my hope in God.
