Occupy Gezi: Turkey continues to generate highly visible, and inspiring examples of resistance for students of social movements and democratization. Hours after the "standing man" began his demonstration at Taksim square, a middle-age woman makes her stand in Ankara, at the very location where a young protestor, Ethem Sarisuluk, was killed by the police forces - a very clear sign of the rapid diffusion of acts of protest through the help of social media. Neither of the stands have been covered by mainstream Turkish media as of yet but the hapless look of the police officers nearby gives a sense of the desperation and helplessness faced by the Islamist government, which has nothing other than violence (and censorship) in its repertoire to put an end to passive resistance.
