Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato announced today the arrest of an Ocean County man for dealing prescription narcotics, taken from the hospital where he is employed as a registered nurse. "I commend the swift actions of the Special Operations Group and the Stafford Township Police Department for investigating and arresting Mr. Kaplan. The strength and amounts of narcotics Kaplan was selling could easily cause death in the hands of those not trained to administer it correctly,” said Prosecutor Coronato. “I want this to serve as a warning to all health care professionals that we are actively on the hunt for those who would betray their professional positions to profit from the illegal sale of prescription narcotics.” Detectives from the Prosecutor’s newly formed Special Operations Group; Southern Enforcement Unit along with members of the Stafford Township Police Department conducted a cooperative investigation that resulted in the arrest of Seth J. Kaplan, 42, of Manahawkin, NJ. On June 10, 2013 at 9:15 pm the cooperating law enforcement agencies stopped Mr. Kaplan who was driving his gold 2010 Cadillac STS at the intersection of Neptune Drive and Nautilus Blvd in Manahawkin. A search was conducted of the vehicle which found quantities of syringes filled with liquid Hydromorphine and Morphine Sulfate, along with a pill bottle containing various prescription pills. Immediately after the vehicle search, detectives from the Special Operations Group along with officers from the Stafford Township Police Department conducted a search of Mr. Kaplan’s residence at 328 Neptune Drive, Manahawkin NJ. The search located additional quantities of Hydromorphine HCI Injections, Morphine Sulfate Injections, Oxycodone pills, Oxycontin pills, Codeine pills, Demoral (Meperdine) Injections, and Diazepam Injections. All total police seized 32 syringes, containing differing amounts of highly potent Hydromorphine, Morphine Sulfate, Demoral (Meperdine) and Diazepam Injections from Mr. Kaplan. The investigation revealed that Mr. Kaplan is a registered nurse employed at Centra State Hospital located in Freehold. It was determined that Mr. Kaplan removed the seized narcotics on various occasions from Centra State and possibly a second area hospital while in performance of his duties. The investigation is continuing as members of the Prosecutor’s Office Special Operations Group are working closely with Centra State officials and State Health officials in furtherance of this matter. Charges against Seth J. Kaplan age 42 of 328 Neptune Drive, Manahawkin, NJ are as follows: Possession of a Schedule II CDS to wit syringes containing Hydromorphine, Possession of a Schedule II CDS to wit syringes containing Hydromorphine with intent to Distribute, Possession of a Schedule II CDS to wit syringes containing Morphine Sulfate, Possession of a Schedule II CDS to wit syringes containing Morphine Sulfate with intent to Distribute, Possession of CDS to wit Oxycodone pills, Possession of CDS to wit Oxycontin pills. The Honorable Superior Court Judge Rochelle Gizinski JSC set Mr. Kaplan’s bail at $30,000 no ten percent. He is currently lodged in Ocean County Jail. Participating in the investigation and the arrest were members of the Stafford Township Police Department, Drug Enforcement Unit. The media and public are reminded that criminal charges are merely accusations and that these defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
