Ocean carrier rate revision roundup for Dec. 12 - Corianne Egan, Associate Editor | Dec 12, 2014 11:20AM EST Carriers announced GRIs this week for several major trade lanes, all effective on Jan. 15. Spot rates on Drewry Maritime Research’s World Container Index composite index, which measures 11 East-to-West trade lanes, has dropped 23.5 percent in the five weeks since Nov. 6. Trans-Pacific Maersk Line intends to increase rates on all trans-Pacific eastbound cargo via both a GRI and peak season surcharge, both effective Jan. 15. The carrier will recommend rate increases of $540 per 20-foot container, $600 per 40-foot container, $675 per 40-foot high cube container and $760 per 45-foot container. The peak season surcharge will add $360 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high cube standard or reefer container, and $510 per 45-foot container. North America to Asia, India and the Middle East Hapag-Lloyd will attempt a rate increase on all dry cargo from Canada and the United States to East Asia, the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East. The GRI will be recommended at $80 per 20-foot container and $100 per 40-foot container. Asia to the Middle East CMA CGM hopes to increase its rates from all Asian ports to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and West India by $100 per 20-foot container and 40-foot container, effective Dec. 15 through Dec. 31. Asia to Oceania Hamburg Sud aims to increase rates from Northeast Asia to Australia, effective Jan. 15. The carrier will charge an extra $300 per 20-foot container at that time. The GRI affects all cargo from Hong Kong, Korea, China and Taiwan. Hamburg Sud also announced a rate increase from Asia to New Zealand, effective Jan. 15. The carrier will attempt to raise rates by $150 per 20-foot container and $300 per 40-foot container. OOCL will also attempt a GRI on all cargo heading from Asia to New Zealand, effective Jan. 15. The rate increase is targeted at $150 per 20-foot container.
