Oct. 10, 2013 Letter to the Editor, The News Gazette, Lexington, Va. I was delighted to read a word of wisdom in my local newspaper yesterday. Your editorial entitled This Is No Way To Run A Country, gave me a ray of hope that there might be room for commonsense and reason in a very dark and confused electorate-world. People I know, people I once thought of as decent, thoughtful, caring people, have written letters supporting Ken Cuccinelli for governor, not because hes qualified, but because he supports their party. It is time they reconsidered the very shocking judgment this party is currently exercising in Washington. A perfect example is Ted Cruz, who has been dumped by his own party. His extreme Tea Party views are nearly identical to Cuccinellis. They are part of a religious sectarian movement that is undermining our government for their own purposes: power, economic advantage and control. Cuccinelli doesnt just want to end the Affordable Care Act: he opposes all welfare benefits such as food stamps (SNAP) and Medicaid. He recently succeeded in pushing a new voter registration law designed to impede minority voters. What you see happening in Washington is happening in Virginia as the Tea Party subtly takes control of our institutions and our lives. The best qualification McAuliffe has is that hes not a lawyer and chances are he wont sue our legally elected president. JUNE NEWBERY, Lexington
