Oct 23rd 1942 Darling, Just a few brief moments to spare so I once again occupy them in writing to you. First of all I hope you are well on the way to complete recovery from your illness. Have just received a letter telling of the three hour operation. And then you say you were in terrible pain all that night and wondering where I was and what I was doing. Well, I suppose it is only natural that you should think of those kinds of things. You will realise that it is impossible for me to tell you where I was on that particular night, but I have very good cause to remember it. I had just ended a pretty stiff motor cycle “tour” and bed was the only thing I longed for. I can stand any amount of that sort of thing though. Anyway I am almost back in “Civie” street again. At least I have an engine and four wheels instead of two, even if the rest of the vehicle differs slightly from a saloon car. Have not seen much of Fred just recently. I think he is out on convoy while I work more or less alone. Very pleased to hear you got the photograph I had taken in Alex. You did not say what you thought of it though. I suppose that will be contained in the next letter. And now about this business of keeping my chin up. Well, well, well! I never knew it had been down. Yes, I know we gave you a bit of a shock and certainly plenty of personal worry, but have a good look at the map and see how much Rommel has actually gained. Just a strip of sand fit for neither man nor beast. But he is still a long way from taking his dearest objective, Alex. And I go so far as to say he will never get it. I have never heard anyone express the opinion that he has any chance at all. There is no room for pessimism here. And as for me personally, you have no need to worry. I can still take care of myself. So, I return your greeting “Chin up”, and darling, hurry up and get better. Have sent you a letter this week telling of some of the impressions I gained during our retreat. Censors are allowing us to give personal experiences now. You should get it soon after this letter. Must close now as night is fast approaching, and the old full moon is just peeping over the horizon. Cheerio darling, and once again “Many Happy Returns”. All my love from your husband Gerald X X X X X X X X X X X X X One for Lucy X
