Oct 28 Name: The Way Only Way Scripture: Matthew 26:36-44 (v 42) “Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.” 39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” 40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” *42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”* 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.” NKJV *Focus Verse Bold Discussion: The world belittles Christians as narrow-minded and intolerant. With billions of people on earth and hundreds of belief systems how could Christians say there is only one God? Jesus said, “I am the way…no one comes to the Father but through me” (John 14:6). Not ‘a’ way among several ways, but ‘the’ way. The only way. Or are we misinterpreting His words? Beyond Jesus’s words about Himself, we have additional proof that He is the only way to God. The night He was betrayed, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane with His disciples to pray. He asked His Father to allow the “cup” to pass (Matthew 26:39)—a reference to God’s wrath against sin that would be atoned by Jesus’s death for us. Three times He asked His Father, and three times the answer was no. If there was another way to God, Jesus would not have to die in our place. There was no other way for Jesus Christ because there is no other way for us. People wonder how there could be only one way to God. The more we learn of God’s holiness, righteousness, and justice, the more we understand our own sinfulness, the more we realize the extent of God’s mercy in providing a way at all! Prayer: Holy Lord, thank You for providing the way for me to be intimately restored to You. Mature Consideration / Spiritual Challenge: How can I share the truth that Jesus is the only way to God with someone today?
