Oct 31 REFORMATION DAY not Halloween! Halloween (October 31) Its origin is Celtic and has to do with summer sacrifices to appease Samhain, the lord of death, and evil spirits. Those doing the pagan rituals believed that Samhain sent evil spirits abroad to attack humans, who could escape only by assuming disguises and looking like evil spirits themselves. Reformation Day (October 31) commemorates Luther’s posting of his 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517. This act triggered the Reformation, as they were immediately translated and distributed across Germany in a matter of weeks. The Protestant Reformation was the rediscovery of the doctrine of justification that is, salvation by grace alone (Eph 2:8-9) through faith alone in Christ alone. The Reformation was also a protest over corruption that Luther saw in the church. Seeing biblical illiteracy, superstition, and false doctrines along with other monks, priests and bishops, and even the most holy in the Catholic faith, popes were teaching doctrines that were not from the bible about the treasury of merit, purgatory, selling of indulgences, and the salvation through good deeds or works. Martin Luther died in 1546, still convinced of the correctness of his Reformation theology, and with his decree of excommunication by Pope Leo X still effective. On his deathbed, Luther was asked: Are you ready to die trusting in your Lord Jesus Christ and to confess the doctrine which you have taught in his name? He answered Yes, before taking his final breath.
