October 1, 2014 Where is Makenzie now? Thanks to your faith and prayers, Makenzie is doing fantastic with her family at home! She loves seeing friends, going to church, attending her high school soccer games, and spending time with her family. LDS seminary council meetings, and going to lots of physical therapy, cognitive and voice therapy, and occupational therapy. She also started piano lessons again, and she loves seeing the progress that Lefty is making! Its been an incredible journey since she recently returned home to yellow ribbons and joyful cheers from family and friends. She has made so much progress and is settling into life at home. Makenzie has enjoyed attending a few high school games since we returned to St. George. At her first home soccer game at Desert Hills High School, she was recognized by her high school soccer team and fans. The team had decorated the stands with special posters and balloons to welcome her (of course all in yellow) and they gave her a special welcome and recognition. Kenzie stood with her teammates during the Star Spangled Banner, and she sat in a special VIP seat on the sidelines with her team. Her younger sister, Makayla, played on both the JV and Varsity team wearing #8 in honor of Makenzie, as that was the Makenzies jersey number. Her team even hung a large banner in front of the bleacher seats with Makenzie’s soccer photo that said, “Makenzie’s Team… playing with Kenzie in our hearts.” Canyon View high school in Cedar City showed a lot of class that night! At the end of the game, after the Desert Hills and Canyon View girls shook hands, the Canyon View team made another slow jog to our side of the field in a single file line straight to Makenzie, and each girl gave Makenzie a high five along with tender comments like, “Get better soon” and “It’s good to meet you.” Following the Canyon View players, their coaches each gave Makenzie a handshake with similar sentiments. I had already put my camera away, and it all happened so quickly, without any notice, so I don’t have a photo of this incredible experience. But, I’m so grateful for the mental picture I took, as it will be with me forever. This quiet gesture of love and friendship brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat, and I will always remember the kindness and support shown by both schools that evening. During our time at home with Makenzie, thanks to your prayers, we have seen many more miracles! 1- Makenzie can eat by herself and Lefty even helps! 2- Makenzie is taking an on-line LDS seminary class and attends her seminary council meetings! 3- Makenzie started taking piano lessons again, and she can play the piano with both hands and is sight reading Lefty is relearning to play and doing a fabulous job! 4- Makenzie can put on and tie her own shoes! 5- Makenzie is writing in a journal, keeping track of her daily schedule, setting goals, and learning more about her brain injury. 6- Makenzie beat her siblings and grandmother in playing two games of Spot It” and she loves to play games! 7- Makenzie is progressing in her out-patient physical therapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive and voice therapy. We have awesome therapists who really go the extra mile to help Makenzie! 8- Makenzie rides a stationary bike at the gym after her daily therapy sessions, and she has increased her time to 20 minutes! 9- Makenzie no longer uses her gait belt and she walks short distances in our home completely unassisted! 10 – She is gaining more independence, strength, and balance each day, and her recovery continues to be extremely positive! Throughout this challenge, I have never heard Makenzie complain about her current situation. She continues to work hard and keep fighting each day. This is where Makenzie is today because of your thoughtful prayers for our sweet daughter. We are extremely grateful to you and to our Heavenly Father who knows and loves each of us. We have grown so much and have become stronger and closer to our Savior, and we are grateful for His atonement that blesses our life each day.
