October 11, 1969 Memorial Stadium Baltimore, MD World Series - Game 1 New York Mets 1 Baltimore Orioles 4 Birds Prck At Seaver - Defeat Mets 4-1 To Go Up 1-0 in Series Forty-five years ago today, the Miracle Mets hit their first post-season speed-bump, as the powerful Orioles knocked Mets ace Tom Seaver out after only five innings, drawing first blood with a 4-1 victory at Baltimore. After a scoreless first inning by the Mets against Orioles lefty ace Mike Cuellar, Orioles, outfielder Don Buford greeted Seaver with a lead-off solo home run just beyond the reach of Mets right fielder Ron Swoboda. The Orioles would add three more runs off Seaver in the home fifth inning, with RBI singles by light-hitting shortstop Mark Belanger and Cuellar, and a two-run double by Buford. The Mets lone run came in the top of the seventh, on a sacrifice fly hit by second baseman Al Weis off Cuellar, who hurled a comete game, eight-strikeout performance. Despite this game ending as many prognosticators had predicted, Seaver and the Mets remained confident, as Seaver stated, years later I swear, we came into the clubhouse more confident than when we had left it. Somebody - I think it was [first baseman Donn] Clendennon - yelled out, Dammit, we can beat these guys! And we believed it. A team knows if theyve been badly beaten or outplayed. And we felt we hadnt been. The feeling wasnt that we had lost, but Hey, we nearly won that game! We hadnt been more than a hit or two from turning it around. It hit us like a ton of bricks.
