October 13th, 2014, was another day at the American University in the Emirates (AUE), devoted to the community service by organizing Mental Health Awareness Campaign with the theme of “Hand in Hand to Wellness”. The event was initiated by the Guidance and Counseling Center and the College of Education and enthusiastically supported and organized in partnership with Dubai Police Medical Center, Dubai Health Authority, Rashid Hospital, Sharjah Ministry of Interior, Emirates Nursing Association, Dubai International Academic City- Student Hub, American Psychiatric and Neurology Center, Dubai School of Health and Janssen a Pharmaceutical company of Johnson and Johnson. The event was inaugurated by the Director of Operations of Tecom Education Cluster, Mr. Ibrahim Moosa Jamal, who stressed the importance of mental health, while congratulating American University in the Emirates for such initiatives and welcoming all DIAC students. Dr. Ali Singel, Director of Dubai Police Medical Center, impressed the audience in his Key Note Speech by relating the relevance of mental health with simple practical real life examples. The event witnessed interesting and productive workshops by eminent speakers like Maria Thomson, from American Center of Psychiatric and Neurology, Zhouleka Haroon from ENA, Asma Mohammed Al Mazim, from Shrajah Ministry of Interior, Osama Qasim Al Blaba, from Dubai Health Authority Rashid Hospital and Ms. Naeema Rajab from Dubai Health Authority. While addressing the importance of such event, the President of AUE, Prof Muthanna Abdul Razzaq, said, “ Such community service provides an opportunity to the students to apply academic learning to real human needs and to make the best use of knowledge gained in the classroom environment. Our yearly campaign for mental health awareness in collaboration with different government institutions, private organizations and companies is just one of our commitment to our society to improve quality of life, promote equal opportunities, respect and dignity for all”, he added further. . This Mental Health Awareness Campaign is now an yearly activity at AUE and this year which was the third consecutive year the Dubai Police Band graced the activity by serenading the event, along with Rashid hospital and Dubai Police medical center who gave free psychological assessment. The support of Dubai School of Health by free BMI screening, blood sugar and blood pressure screening and American Psychiatric and Neurology Center by giving a workshop on Maximizing Peak Performance was highly appreciated equally by students, faculty and staff members of AUE.
