October 17, 2014 – Friday 1 Peter 5:1-3 Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you 2 to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight,[a] not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it[b]—not for sordid gain but eagerly. 3 Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. THE REALIZATION OF LEADERSHIP There is an old say that goes like this; “Everyone is a leader to someone.” The best leaders I have ever known have been people who are examples of positive direction. If we want to lead others to knowing Christ then the best way to do so is to present ourselves as examples of living a changed life. Most of us rarely think of ourselves as leaders. We just attempt to live as honorable lives as possible. Over the past year or so of walking I have posted each day the results of my daily walk. I do this primarily to keep myself accountable and focused on making healthier decisions each day. It is amazing at how many people look at my daily post of exercise and are inspired to get out and start walking and watching what they eat. It is humbling to realize that by simply holding myself accountable that others see that as an example and are thus motivated to work toward living healthier lives. No one should ever lead another person because it feels good to have power to manipulate others into doing what we want. True leadership is doing what is good and right for yourself and an unintended result will be others following your example. So if you never thought of yourself as a leader, think again because “Everyone is a leader to someone.” In what direction are you leading? Prayer: Lord Jesus, you were obedient to the father throughout your time here. You have given us an example of how to live as a child of God. Send your Holy Spirit to make us good leaders by example of doing what is good, right and just in our world. Amen.
