October 1927 - Milwaukee Fire Dept. An October 1927 edition of the newspaper the Milwaukee Leader proclaimed, This is the only city in the country that makes its own apparatus. The headline referred to 12 pumpers and 6 ladder trucks, along with 3 hose wagons, built from scratch by the department shop. The profitable endeavor lasted into the 1930s, with some of the MFD- build rigs serving nearly three decades. The MFDs ingenuity and resourcefulness were well known, as the department had built some if its own equipment since the horse and buggy days. Truck Company 13s service truck ( straight frame with no aerial) was one of six built by the department shop. Here, it rests outside its bungalow-style firehouse at 47th and Center Streets in 1926. Since most of the Milwaukees growth during the 1920s was in residential areas, these unique firehouses were built to blend in with the neighborhood architecture.
