October 19th 2000, was the day fourteen years ago that ended the lawsuit between Pilates, Inc. and Current Concepts (now Balanced Body) and Ken Endelman. Pilates, Inc. had sued Balanced Body in an attempt to prohibit Balanced Body and thousands of Pilates practitioners from using the word Pilates to describe what we do and from honoring the man who inspired so many of us. The scheme backfired on Pilates, Inc. when the court validated what most of us already knew -- Pilates is a method of exercise and that the trademark was fraudulently procured by Pilates, Inc. The court ordered the cancellation of the trademark.
