October 2, 2013 - A “bayong” containing explosives, firing devices and blasting caps with detonating cords were among the items left by a group of individuals who ran off to different directions after they saw a team from the 1st Maneuver Platoon of QPPSC who was then conducting their regular combat or clearing operations. According to PSupt Gerardo Umayao, Company Commander of Quezon Provincial Public Safety Company (QPPSC) at about 3:00 AM of October 2, 2013 when a team led by PInsp Nimrod Balgemino Jr was conducting combat operation along KM 5, Marcos Highway, Brgy Magsaysay, Infanta, Quezon when they saw four suspicious individuals. When the operating team tried to approach them, the suspicious looking individuals immediately scampered to different directions in the grassy parts of the cliff towards Agos River. A brief chase ensued but due to darkness, unfamiliar terrain and vegetation operating team failed to locate the four individuals. The patrolling team carefully searched the area and found a bayong containing five pieces of explosives believed to be anti-personnel mines; a styrofoam containing two pieces of blasting cap cases; five pieces of firing devices and three (3) pieces of blasting caps with detonating cords; two pieces of t-shirts; a flashlight; a bolo; two pieces of stick both rolled with detonating cord; and the two (2) set of suspected live anti-personnel mines with detonating cord/blasting cap mounted towards the road. The police personnel collectively exerted their efforts and successfully defused the said mines. The operating elements withdrew from the area at around 5:30 AM of same date. PSSupt Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, OIC for Quezon Police Provincial Office (QPPO) the suspicious individuals might be a member of the CNN who were chanced upon by the operating team while on the act of installing the said explosive devices and was preempted by the dedicated police officers who vigorously conducts patrol in their area. Complaint for violation of RA 8294 as amended by RA 9516 is being prepared by QPPSC before the office of the provincial prosecutor, Lucena City against CNN personalities operating in the area. Coordination with PNP Bomb Data Center is being prepared for the proper disposition of the said recovered explosive materials. PSSupt Ylagan assures the public that Quezon police is doing the best efforts to serve and protect in order to provide a safe place to live, work, invest and do business. ###
