October 2, After I was told that a total mastectomy was needed, I - TopicsExpress

October 2, After I was told that a total mastectomy was needed, I had lots of decisions to make....Miles Miles Cook was right there with me each step of the way. I could not have done it without him, or my family, and that includes my church family. As I share my story you will see over and over how the support I had made the difference. I chose to have a reconstruction process called a Tram Flap. It is where they take the fat from your stomach (just like a tummy tuck) to create the new breast. Wow....Sounds great a free tummy tuck. At least there will be one positive out of this....NOT. See they take most of your stomach muscles with the fat. Oh the reconstruction was a success but I have missed those stomach muscles over the past 14 years. The main point is that I was Ok. There was much more cancer than they thought. But they got what they could and felt the rest would be covered by chemo and radiation. My In laws came to help with Miles and the kids while I was in the hospital. My mother in law was so great to stay with me overnight and deal with all my tubes. Then my parents came to care for me after I got home. My mom had the horrible task of emptying drainage bags and caring for my incisions. Of course the Church was there with meals and rides for the kids to and from places. I have so much to be thankful for. Although going through all the Prep visits were totally embarrassing, and the surgery (the reconstruction) caused weeks of uncomfortable pain, I am glad I chose that route. Remember I had options because it was found early. Please check your self monthly. Here is a video of the Breast Chek KIt when it was featured on the show The Doctors.
