CPCRI develops new technique to tap Neera The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) has developed a brand of Neera called Kalparasa. Neera, the sweet sap tapped from the immature inflorescence of coconut, is said to be rich in nutritional and health benefits. The technique developed by the CPCRI yields sap that is fresh, hygienic, and devoid of chemicals and contaminants. The institute is awaiting a patent for Kalparasa. The device by which the sap is collected involves fixing a grooved adaptor to the cut end of a spadix of a size equivalent to the diameter of the spadix. A hard pipe is attached to the groove and the sap flows easily into a connecting bottle. The bottle is kept in an icebox containing ice cubes. As the entire device is airtight, the sap is free from contamination, and in the icebox, it remains cool, preventing fermentation. 1st bionic man walks, talks, breathes Scientists have developed the world’s first robot human made entirely of prosthetic parts and he can walk, talk and even has a beating heart. The robot, which cost almost USD 1 million to build, was assembled from prosthetic body parts and artificial organs donated by laboratories around the world. Roboticists Rich Walker and Matthew Godden of Shadow Robot Co. in England put together the bionic man. The bionic man has the same prosthetic hand as Meyer, the i-LIMB made by Touch Bionics, with a wrist that can fully rotate and motors in each finger. To support his prosthetic legs, the bionic man wears a robotic exoskeleton dubbed “Rex,” made by REX Bionics in New Zealand. He also has a nearly complete set of artificial organs, including an artificial heart, blood, lungs (and windpipe), pancreas, spleen, kidney and functional circulatory system. The asteroid 2013 TV135 made a close approach to Earth on September 16, when it came within about 6.7 million kilometres and it is likely to pay our planet another visit in 2032. However, NASA has allayed fears that the massive space rock could prove dangerous, with the US space agency saying that the probability this asteroid could then impact Earth is only one in 63,000. The asteroid was discovered on October 8, 2013, by astronomers working at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Ukraine. As of October 14, asteroid 2013 TV135 is one of 10,332 near-Earth objects that have been discovered.
