October 21st - Black History Facts John Birks Dizzy Gillespie famed jazz musician was born on this date in 1917 in Cheraw, South Carolina, the youngest of nine children. Gillespie was one of the creators of Be-Bop. Earl Lloyd became the first Black person to play in an NBA game (beating out Chuck Cooper and Nat Clifton by a few days) on this date in 1950. Lloyd later went on to become the NBAs first Black Assistant Coach and first Black Chief Scout. During his 9 year career the 65 forward averaged 8.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. William Lloyd Garrison, publisher of the Liberator and prominent American abolitionist, was drug through the streets of Boston, MA by a pro slavery mob on this date in 1835. Mr Garrison was also one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society and continued his social reform work until his death in 1879.
