October 30 is the 76th birthday of actor Dick Gautier. Although most people associate Gautier with his recurring role as Hymie the Robot on TVs Get Smart, he originated the role of Conrad Birdie on Broadway in the 1960 production of Bye, Bye Birdie. I looked all over the Internet for clips of Gautier playing Birdie and came up with this 14-minute condensed segment from the show that was broadcast on The Ed Sullivan Show - Gautier only makes a brief appearance (beginning at 4:30 of the clip), but its worth it just to see him open a can of beer. You can also enjoy terrific performances by Dick Van Dyke (Albert) and Paul Lynde (Harry). The clip is especially fascinating because Sullivan himself became an integral figure in the show.
