October 30th, 1988 - Dorm K208, The Evergreen State College 11, Olympia, WA This was the first show at which Kurt smashed his guitar. It was rumored he had busted a few prior to this event, but this was the first documented time that he utterly destroyed his guitar. We were feeling so weird because we were being treated like kings, so we had to destroy everything, ~ Kurt Cobain Nirvana first did it in 1988, before the band became famous, at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, They generally smashed when a show was going really well or really badly, ~Michael Azerrad At first, the band bought cheap pawn shop guitars, substituting them at the last minute for the Fender Jaguar or Fender Mustang that Mr. Cobain would play during the concert. When the band was too poor even to buy prop guitars, its record label would send guitars by Federal Express. When Nirvana became rich and successful, it still needed to smash. ~Michael Azerrad I heard stories about Kurts guitar destruction from the Sub Pop people early on, when he was out on the road hed call them up and say, `I dont know what got into me, but I just smashed up my guitar. I dont think he was planning on smashing guitars from day one. It was just something he did. The poor Sub Pop people would call all the pawn shops up and down the coast, looking for Univox guitars. ~ Jack Endino. Its powerful when Kurt does it or Pete Townshend, maybe not so powerful when Garth Brooks does it. Garth shouldnt be smashing guitars in my humble opinion. He just doesnt get it. Hes just not a smasher. ~John Hiatt Mr. Brooks, the rebel country singer, busted up his Takamine acoustic guitar at a concert in Dallas that was broadcast on NBC. Pieces of the first guitar Nirvanas Kurt Cobain destroyed onstage will be included in a new exhibition about the band in Seattle. Shards of the Univox Hi-Flyer guitar will be among the 200 band artifacts to be featured in the exhibition, called Nirvana: Taking Punk To The Masses. The show will also feature the yellow cardigan Cobain often wore between 1991 and 1994, handwritten lyrics to Spank Thru and Floyd The Barber and the winged angel stage prop featured on the band’s In Utero tour. The exhibition will run from April 16-22 at the Experience Music Project in the band’s hometown. Bassist Krist Novoselic said: It’s great that there will soon be a collection that celebrates [Cobain’s] contribution to music and culture. He added: There’s a story with Nirvana at its centre, but it’s a story that also includes the many people, bands and institutions that make up a music community. Along with the exhibits the show will feature recorded recollections from Nirvana associates. These include Novoselic, In Utero producer Steve Albini, Bleach producer Jack Endino and original drummer Chad Channing. A 250 page book, Taking Punk to The Masses: From Nowhere To Nevermind is also being planned to be published by Fantagraphics Books in conjunction with the exhibition. ~NME March 2011 Set List: School • Love Buzz • Floyd The Barber • Spank Thru • Big Cheese • Hairspray Queen • Mr. Moustache • Sifting • Mexican Seafood • Aero Zeppelin • Run, Rabbit, Run! • Immigrant Song • Blew ~winterbeard~
