October 5, 2007: This was an effort to recreate the classic era of railroad travel in America through imagery. The good folks at the Friends of the Depot in Bowling Green (particularly Dorian Walker) set this up with old cars and models in period clothing (50s) and cars in their restored L&N passenger train. This was part of our annual convention for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Historical Society. The car the family is boarding is an L&N Pine-series Pullman (Towering Pine), built as 6-6-4 cars (six sections, six roomettes and four double bedrooms) by Pullman-Standard in 1953. These very popular sleepers were used in virtually all main line L&N passenger trains of that era. In late August 1966 I was in a roomette of sister car Yellow Pine at the very rear of the southbound Humming Bird--train 5. Bowling Green was a stop, but it was after midnight and I barely recall raising the shade to see where we were. I slept through the switching of my car at Nashville to train 93, the Atlanta-bound Georgian, and woke up later that morning as we clipped off the miles through north Georgia. Before I went forward for a great country ham and egg breakfast in the diner, I went to the rear vestibule and opened the top half of the Dutch door---just long enough to stick my noggin and camera out for a shot as the train roared around a left-hand curve. My, my---what a civilized way to travel!
