October 6, 1976 Thammasat Student Massacre Tomorrow is October 6 which for Thammasat University used to mean much more than it seems it does today. It was the day on which dozens of students and others were killed and brutalized at and near Thammasat Universitys Thaprajan campus. In fact, its one of Thailands most remembered days in history yet the current military-appointed government doesnt want anyone to have remembrance activities on this day. From what I understand, Thammasats leadership has agreed with not having or allowing remembrance activities tomorrow. I expect there will be some but nothing official. This to me seems like insanity. Thammasat today seems to be far away from its roots in siding with a military government. The victims of the 1976 abuses by the Thai military and associated groups and their families have never received justice for what happened at that time.
