October 6th Bulletin Article BALANCE SHEET? Charles Coats Anyone who has ever taken any accounting or has run a business knows about a balance sheet. This sheet is used to record expenses and income to measure whether one is making a profit or is suffering a loss. The balance sheet is a critical piece of information and it is controlled carefully. When using the balance sheet, the expenses incurred are recorded. Line by line, the accountant lists the various things purchased to keep the business going. They take note of the expenses brought about by utilities and wages. A careful accountant painstakingly records these and verifies that no mistakes have been made. Also, on the balance sheet, the income of the person or company is shown. The various sources of income would include sales as well as interest drawn. Again, this income is carefully noted to make sure it is accurately recorded. It is important that this is right. The bottom line of the balance sheet is did we have more income than expenses and therefore made a profit? If so, all is well. Far too many people today treat their lives like a balance sheet. They believe that the bottom line is to have more good things than bad things. As far as they are concerned, the good will therefore outweigh the bad, and they will be able to dwell eternally with God. The problem with this idea of man is that it does not work that way with God. With God, we are either for him or against him (Lk. 11:23). There is no “mostly for God”, or “I’m not that bad” as a lot of people say. With God, it is all or none. This concept is best seen in Ezekiel 33 where God explains to Israel what happens when one is righteous but then turns from God. Note particularly verse 13 – “When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousness shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.” If we turn from God, it will not matter how many good things we have done or how faithful we had been in the past. God judges us by where we are now. Remember, there is no balance sheet with God. Walk faithfully with God and we will be rewarded (Rev. 2:10; 1 Jn. 1:7)
