October 7: Being prepared. Stepping up. We want to be there don’t we? When the chips are down with our friends, family, co-workers and any number of other groups, we want to be prepared to help don’t we? We not only want to be prepared, we want to be ready to so when called upon to help, we can step up and be there for them right? We want to take the game-winning shot or get a chance to kick the game-winning field goal. We want to be considered a solid enough friend or parent or employee to be there for someone. We want to be the “go-to” guy or gal. October 7, 1780 the Revolutionary War Battle of Kings Mountain was waged in South Carolina. Outnumbered, the Patriot forces were made up mostly of volunteers from the mountains of Southwest Virginia and modern-day Northeast Tennessee. They marched all the way from their homes, over the mountain – thus earning the name “Overmountain Men” – looking for the British. They were prepared and they stepped up to the cause. The Patriots defeated the British which suffered 10 times more casualties and saw more than half of its force captured. It marked the turning point of the Revolutionary War in America’s fight for freedom. We never know what challenges lie ahead. As Christians, we must learn from both the good and bad circumstances in our lives to prepare us for what is down the road. When it happens, we need to step up. “No one will be able to stand up against you all the days or your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave nor forsake you.” (Joshua 1:5)
