October 7 I remember back in the middle 70s preaching a sermon on the subject, “What in the world is the church doing?” I remember our church attendance was soaring, and we were running several hundred people in our three Sunday morning services. There were some statistics included in the message showing that the church was growing in the middle seventies. I believe that in the middle 70s, we were also going through a mild recession. One has to ask the question in all honesty, “what in the world is the church doing today?” I believe the word of God is still being preached on Sunday morning. I hope that people are still witnessing to the Gospel, and I hope that people are still living their faith in the words and actions of their life. I just received the Parish Paper with the question “Where are the un-churched?” The Christian church is getting great results in China, South Korea, and some other countries. I hope that the secularization of America is not causing the decline of the church, or the fact that we have so many technology toys to play with that we are neglecting our spiritual life. Neither the whips of Pilate nor the nails of the cross brought tears to our Savior’s eyes. Jesus wept over Jerusalem, His own people, because of the spectacle of them being so concerned about the temporal that they forgot about the eternal. Prayer: Lord, help me to not be overcome by the cares and concerns of this life to the extent that I forget about or avoid the eternal priorities.
