October 9th: Today is the Feast of Saint Dennis of Paris, Patron of Long Journeys and Liberation from Fear, Frenzy, and Headaches. Blessed Dennis was beheaded in the infamous Montmartre District of Paris. Legend said he walked, head-in-hand, for six miles to the present site of the great Paris Cathedral that now bears his name. When he was asked about the most difficult part of the journey, his chopped-off head is said to have replied, "The first step was the most difficult one." Today, if you have a headache, a heartache, a soulache, or worse -- consider this saintly remark whenever you seek the cure. Whatever the first step; whether moving on, moving away, moving closer, or simply moving from stagnancy -- take the first step today. Fear beheads and behearts us, making us delay dealing with our problems. Take the first step -- not on a journey to some Parisian Cathedral, but to the road to personal liberation and realization.
