October Days…Oct. 27 - 29, 1863 Raccoon Mountain and the Battle of Wauhatchie: Hooker’s Adjutant General gives a detailed account of the opening of the “Cracker Line” in his Report of Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, U. S. Army, commanding Eleventh and Twelfth Army Corps, with congratulatory orders. OCTOBER 26-29, 1863.--Reopening of the Tennessee River. The report can be found in the Official Records, Series 1, VOL. XXXI/1 [S# 54], which the Chattanooga Public Library has available for you. This particular correspondence is posted online, but not all letters are, making our collection valuable to Civil War Researchers. And from the Raccoon Mountain Campground : Civil War buffs will be delighted to know that Raccoon Mountain was added to the Tennessee Civil War Trail. The State of Tennessee erected a memorial plaque on our property to mark the role that Raccoon Mountain played in the Civil War. The famed “Cummings Gap” through Raccoon Mountain is less than one-half mile from our campground and was crucial to the establishment of the Cracker Line and subsequent resupply of besieged Union troops in Chattanooga. It is also interesting to note that the resurgence of the stream passage that flows within our vast cave system was the only source of year round water for both Union and Southern troops.
