October Horror (31 Days Of Horror Movie Reviews) Day Four: Grave Encounters (2011) I’ll be honest. Id never describe this movie as a home run. Maybe not even as a triple. But a long, high, off-the-wall stand-up double? Hell, yeah. So, if you’ll forgive me for all those hockey references, let’s get on with this review. Grave Encounters tells the story of the host and crew of a paranormal investigation TV show who visit an abandoned mental hospital, where things go horribly wrong. It’s presented as a found-footage documentary, but without any bookend scenes that might have made it feel a bit more realistic. If you’re looking for something that comes off as believable as the Blair Witch Project did, this won’t be your movie. But if you’re the kind of person who didn’t enjoy Blair Witch because it didn’t really show you anything, this one might be right up your alley. The film stars no one who is anyone, and the acting isn’t what I’d call stellar; in fact, if I could think of another football metaphor that painted a picture of something that was overwrought and painfully one-dimensional, I’d probably use it here. But here’s the good news: the film delivers in the scare department, which is kind of the whole point of a movie like this, right. It builds up a nice tension, and when the scares come, they have a fairly strong impact. There’s one trick shot that is very well played (but unfortunately the filmmakers overuse it and eventually take away its strength) and if you’ve seen this, you probably know the one I’m talking about. That woman? Facing the wall? And as they get closer, she starts to turn around, and…. Oh, hell yes. Good stuff there. Overall, this one’s worth watching on a creepy October night with all the lights out, especially if you’re one of those people who enjoys watching Ghost Hunters, but who wishes they’d just actually SHOW US SOMETHING once in awhile, damn it! youtube/watch?v=g8FBRATbJoA
