October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability involving difficulties acquiring and processing language that is typically manifested by a lack of proficiency in reading, writing, and spelling. Dyslexia is the most common form of learning disabilities in which 1 in 5 people are diagnosed. Those with dyslexia use the right side of the brain to process language, while non-dyslexics use three areas on the left side of the brain to process language. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 15% of the population has Dyslexia. We at The Hillside School believe that having a learning disability is something that makes students exceptional in their own way. Through our multi-sensory classroom based education, our students can appreciate their own “learning needs” and learn how to advocate for themselves. As we recognize Dyslexia Awareness Month in October we will continue to stand by our mission in maximizing the potential of the child with learning disabilities through excellence in education.
