Octubre 27: Beato Luis Baba. Mártir en el Japón, de la Tercera Orden († 1624). Beatificado por Pío IX el 7 de julio de 1867. Luis Baba, mártir en el Japón, nació de una familia japonesa de antigua tradición católica y fue el catequista predilecto de Fray Luis Sotelo, franciscano. Por su celo y sus capacidades catequísticas fue escogido por él como compañero de misión en los muchos y largos viajes, una experiencia que lo confirmó siempre más en su propósito de prodigarse para el servicio de la fe. De regreso de España visitó a México y luego llegó a las islas Filipinas. La última parte del viaje de Manila a Nagasaki se realizó en un junco de japoneses, los cuales, temiendo comprometerse por haber transportado al país misioneros (era el tiempo de la dura persecución), los entregaron sin más a las autoridades, que los arrestaron y en 1622 los enviaron a Omura, donde el catequista Luis vio realizarse su antiguo deseo de ser admitido a la Tercera Orden de San Francisco y vestir su hábito. La mañana del 25 de agosto de 1624 el gobernador de Omura notificó a Luis Baba y a otros cuatro prisioneros la sentencia que los condenaba al suplicio del fuego. Ante esta noticia el ánimo de ellos se sintió pleno de gozo y juntos dieron gracias a Dios. Antes de ser conducidos al suplicio, el gobernador los sometió a un interrogatorio preguntándoles sus nombres y su especialidad. Por todos respondió el Beato Luis Sotelo: “estos dos padres pertenecen uno a la Orden de Santo Domingo y el otro a la compañía de Jesús y se llaman Pedro Vásquez y Miguel Carvalho. De estos dos japoneses, uno es sacerdote y religioso de mi Orden, el otro, Luis Baba, antes era catequista, y yo en la prisión lo recibí en la Orden de la Penitencia de San Francisco. Todos nosotros predicamos la fe en Jesucristo y estamos prontos a morir en testimonio de esta fe”. El gobernador tomó nota de esta declaración y los santos confesores de la fe fueron conducidos al lugar de la ejecución cerca de Omura donde habían muerto mártires también el Beato Apolinar Franco y sus compañeros. A lo largo del viaje no cesaron de predicar a Jesucristo. Al llegar al lugar establecido fueron atados a los postes y se encendieron las hogueras. El mártir Luis Baba, sintiendo aflojarse los lazos que lo mantenían atado pasó entre las llamas y se arrodilló delante del Beato Luis Sotelo para recibir su última bendición, luego regresó tranquilamente a su poste y esperó allí la muerte sonriente.
