Octubre 8: Beato Martín Gómez. Mártir en el Japón, de la Tercera Orden († 1627). Beatificado por Pío IX el 7 de julio de 1867. Martín Gómez, japonés de nacionalidad, estaba inscrito en la Tercera Orden de San Francisco. Su padre era portugués, su madre japonesa. Había dado hospedaje a los misioneros cristianos, por lo cual fue arrestado y condenado a muerte, pues las disposiciones del gobierno prohibían absolutamente esta actividad; invitado a renegar de su propia fe rehusó enérgicamente, afirmando que ni la muerte lo podría apartar de aquella fe tan profundamente arraigada en su corazón. Después de la persecución de 1597 que dio al Japón el selecto grupo de 23 mártires guiados por San Pedro Bautista, la Iglesia pudo disfrutar de un período de gran fervor bajo el emperador Cubosama y pudo difundirse ampliamente. La obra de los Franciscanos y de los Jesuitas se amplió con la apertura de esta misión también a otras Ordenes Religiosas entre ellas los Agustinos y los Dominicanos. La rabia de los bonzos logró todavía influir con amenazas y engañosos motivos políticos y económicos en el corazón del emperador, que en 1614 publicó un edicto con el cual proscribía la religión católica, expulsaba a todos los misioneros y ordenaba derribar las iglesias y condenaba a muerte a cuantos persistieran en su fe. Fue un inmenso incendio de fuego y sangre que se abatió sobre la floreciente Iglesia, que contaba entonces con más de dos millones de fieles. Se ensayaron suplicios de toda clase en un lapso de unos 18 años, sin respetar ninguna edad ni clase social. Entre estos innumerables héroes de la fe se pudieron recoger las actas de unos 205 mártires que fueron beatificados por Pío IX en 1867, pertenecientes a las Ordenes de Santo Domingo, San Agustín y Jesuitas. A la Orden de San Francisco pertenecen 45, de los cuales 18 a la Primera Orden, 15 a la Tercera y los demás, familiares y amigos de ellos. El 17 de agosto de 1627 Martín Gómez fue llevado de la cárcel a la santa colina, donde junto con otros compañeros fue todavía invitado a renegar de su fe, pero todos permanecieron inconmovibles en la profesión de su religión. Fue decapitado y su alma coronada por la aureola del martirio voló a la gloria del cielo. Fue beatificado entre los otros 205 mártires del Japón el 7 de julio de 1867 por Pío IX.
