Oddly I seem to have missed this post yesterday, managed to put it on the blog but not here: Are whistleblowers at risk from the intelligence agencies being able to see metadata? This does not tell us anything we have not been told already but does point out that the hoovering up of metadata by the intelligence services need not only be worrying when looking at large amounts of metadata to build up a picture of individuals daily lives. Things like the subject lines can be very helpful to the government on an individual basis too – for example to catch whistleblowers. All that would be needed would be the emails who from and to so as to be able to find out when a journalist is talking to a government employee and the journalist is only going to have opened the email if its header revealed that it might be an interesting email to look at, something that might well be enough to then provide suspicion that this person is the source of the leak. The government could then have the person’s computer searched so as to confirm. In short it undermines the ability of journalists to protect sources. theguardian/technology/2013/sep/30/email-surveillance-could-reveal-journalists-sources-expert-claims
