Ode to Madiba A tragedy that would be Of a life at prime - TopicsExpress

Ode to Madiba A tragedy that would be Of a life at prime circumscribed Of dreams and aspirations arrested Before crowning, thwarted and curtailed Of youth indefinitely postponed But for the fight that remained enflamed Of embers deep in the belly Glowing, glaring and dazzling all the time Un-extinguished by the enemy’s damnedest Brooking neither the enemy’s strength nor his prisons A warrior was born The enemy did not know this That to fight is not merely to shoot That fighting happens even when it’s not That prison is merely a site of struggle That a superior idea is more potent a weapon Than any in the enemy’s arsenal That the people will not be duped into forgetting That absence or presence is irrelevant That be it now, be it later The people would govern! Nor did we all know That we can fight against a system And embrace the people who supported it That building a nation is a forward looking task Predicated on forgiving and forgetting the enemy’s past sins Or forever be engaged in an all-consuming conflagration That hatred is a waste of precious time Consuming the very same energies necessary for building That we cannot plough anything in a scorched earth Today Content that a legacy of unity has been established That as a nation we have learnt the error of our ways The legend may be no more But he lives among us! Content that we know what we need to know Or we ignore this at our own ultimate peril Madiba! As your heart stops beating Long may you live! -Monde Nkasawe-
