Ode to Orkut: I didnt join Orkut becuase it had fun games or apps that tells random things. Mobiles were not yet an addiction, very few had a mobile at home, leave alone for themselves. We, the 90s kids joined Orkut after school, because we knew that might be the only way we can stay connected to friends. We all went our own way after school, some joined the masses of engineering, some decided to try their hands at something different, some moved on to other cities, but Orkut kept us connected. When the entire school life went on with people telling that life is all about marks, I neither studied nor socialized. Orkut was a platform that helped me find out about the wonderful people I never really got to know in person even though I knew them for years together. We have all now been coveted by the blue social network that most of the people I know started using because of the silly apps. I spent years playing Mafia Wars, but facebook though got me to where I am, got you to reading this, will probably never kindle a childhood memory like Orkut would. Those scraps I got and posted, the BLING happy birthday gifs, those testimonials we all secretly wished and sometimes begged for, that happiness in knowing who is seeing our profiles, switching it off, stalking people and then switching the privacy settings back, the random communities where we met like minded people and the customized backgrounds...Orkut isnt just a social network, its a memory lane, a nostalgia that will be with us forever. Somehow, as sad as it is, it seems more fitting for Orkut to fade with the time than for it to try and compete with the modern social networks. Just like I cant imagine Nokia 1100 becoming a smartphone or Maruti 800 becoming a Luxury Sedan! Thank you and fare well Orkut!
