Ode to when we were young Once upon a time not that long ago. We were good kids by obeying our parents. There were rules at home and for outside as well. Each morning it was get dressed for school and feed yourself. Those days you were no longer a baby once you went to school. Our parents went to work, just like today butit was different. I felt loved and cared for having a place to live and food to eat. The toys we had lasted for years and were respected as valuable, they cost money. Most things were not throw away like today so each of us fixed things. What child did not like praise from our overworked parents, I did. It was not like today going overboard with everything and reality is blurred. My friend said she felt like no one cared as she put glass on the railroad tracks. If she only realized all of us kids were told to go out and play . Realistically we did go find things to do and stayed out of trouble. How many times did we all put a coin, glass or a small stone before the train passed ? Other common rules were to be home for lunch, wash your hands first, eat then drink. Neighborhood kids were all home eating too so it was perfect timing for afternoon adventures. In the woods we built forts, played football and baseball, then slid down hills on cardboard. Weather was only a new situation to deal with as the winter things came out so we could go out. A storm of wind and snow two feet high was a paradise if you had on a snowsuit, gloves, scarf, furry hat and boots. Often I remember sitting by the stove unlacing my frozen boots with ice everywhere and red faces. Money was there if we took our snowshovels up and down the street doing driveways and walkways. Possibly we saved some money but a trip to a little store for candy was first then home for hot chocolate. Families were a group of loving members, usually, with each of us avoiding problems. Imaging back then whinning and carrying on in a self way like today with unlimited expectations. Children all had to be home when the street lights came on and not a minute later, everyone knew that. Ofcourse there were exceptions but in general life passed day by day as we grew more and more. Let it never be forgotten that parents back then loved more silently but no less than today. Books on care, nuturing and togetherness were non existant before Spock,Ben. Only a person over sixty four, will know what I mean by parental affection, back then being silent. Mother often said Do not get a big head over this or that , whatever I mastered. The loving smile down at me meant the most. Finally let me say that self was just a word then but others meant everything. We knew we were individuals, all different,be kind, helpful. Today it is a ME, ME, ME reality, never enough of anything to satisfy, MORE MORE MORE for ME. Sadness overcomes me when I see the young today, only on their gluttus maximus, only fingers moving, living in a virtual game, alone and liking it.
