Odisha Home Department has written to Union Government to allow at least 8 IPS officers into State cadre out of the total successful candidates appeared in Union Public Service Commission conducted Civil Services Examination for the year 2012. IPS Cadre strength of Odisha is 188, while 131 posts are meant for Direct Recruits and 57 posts under Promotion Quota for promotion of Odisha Police Service Officers to IPS Cadre. Out of 131 posts of Direct Recruits, only 71 IPS officers are actually available for Odisha. 21 IPS officers are now serving the Union Government and more will follow the same. Only 30 IPS are holding SP posts against the Cadre strength of 52 posts. It may be noted here that the Naveen Patnaik led BJD Government had requested Union Home Ministry to allocate at least 15 IPS officers from CSE-2010,but MHA only offered 4 IPS officers, later one left and join Indian Railway Service . The number then stands at 3. Odisha had sought 12 IPS officers from 2011 CSE but MHA given only 4. From CSE-2012, only five IPS officers have been allotted to Odisha.
