Of Change and Development ( 1) I was just sharing with a friend the amazing difference technological advancement in the communication sector has brought into our lives. Talking about GSM, cell phones, smart phones and IT. In a few years hence a generation will grow up not knowing what it meant to travel from one town, one city even one State to another , just to make one telephone call. Yes! I remember that as late as 1999, during the Duke election, we sometimes had to travel to Ogoja or Katsina-Ala in Benue state to be able to make a call to calabar or Lagos to keep in touch, to give a report on goings on, to maintain a link with the project. I just wonder now how we managed to get anything done then! I wonder how it would have been if we could all send text messages, emails, Facebook messages, twitter messages to our Principal and to our colleagues then! If we could propagate our agenda with the ease technology allows today, I can imagine the colour it would have all added. The speed with which we could have made ourselves understood. Maybe the unintended consequences too. Fast forward to 2014... I am not sure this generation appreciates the import of technology on their lives! or maybe as usual they just take it for granted. I wonder how much this technology will affect the next election. With all the Facebook campaigns, bulk SMS, twitter messages inundation we are subjected to on a daily basis. It has not all been positive for all. I can imagine how many small businesses in the cyber cafes, closed down and with it how many jobs lost! Fax machines are almost obsolete. Photographers have lost a chunk of their clientele to smart phones. Greeting cards business must be struggling. Newspapers are on the verge of extinction. I feel privileged to have traversed both generations and transited in a way that despite not having the privilege of a formal IT education one can navigate the fringes of this sector enough to remain literate within the context of modern realities. Indeed, my determination to study a bit of IT started the day I listened to a programme on Tv and the presenter said, in the new millennium, anybody that is not Computer literate, is an illiterate! Welcome to the new. Remember, the speed with which the technology in this sector is advancing needs constant upgrade! Upgrade yourself today and everyday! Happy Sunday!
