Of all of the things that sisters can share, I am so profoundly saddened that my sister and I share this loss, only a year apart. Both of us lost a child, both of them 24 years old. My only son, her first born daughter. For all of the pain and grief I felt when my son died, even I had no words that were sufficient when my niece died. Anyone who has lost a child can tell you that no words will comfort you or ease your pain, and nothing you can say will ease the pain or comfort a mother who has lost a child, even if its your own sister. What I am so grateful for is that she, like no other person, knows exactly where I was only a year before she was. She, like no other person, understands the hole. Not only the hole in your heart, your life, and your mind, but the hole that beckons. And I, like no other person, can be there to reassure her that the hole gets smaller until you arent in any danger of falling in any more. I promise.
