Of all the projects that Books in Homes is involved with—Families as First Teachers is one of the most inspiring! Understanding the idea that the early years of a child’s life are the most important for learning and development, Families as First Teachers is a brilliant service that provides resources and support for young families in remote communities. Below is a fantastic article about Joseph Sparling—the brilliant man behind a ground-breaking education project that changed the lives of disadvantaged children in the US, and is now looking to repeat the results in remote Aboriginal communities across Australia. My own professional goal is to get to people who can benefit most. Its an area where you can begin to see rather dramatic results in a reasonable period of time. Thats very addictive, and its also what keeps parents engaged. We are very proud to be in collaboration with 21 Families as First Teachers communities in the Northern Territory, providing books to over 900 families each term.
