Of all the so-called education reform efforts proposed and - TopicsExpress

Of all the so-called education reform efforts proposed and implemented in New Mexico, the most harmful to children is the one that wants to flunk third graders if they are not reading at third grade level. I have 44 years of experience as a teacher and a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Reading Education. I am writing this to tell you that all research says that is not, absolutely NOT, the way to get children to read and to graduate from high school. It has been reported that about 15% of children who cant read at 3rd grade level by third grade have a higher rate of dropout. I have news for those who think they know kids. Those 15% who cant read at 3rd grade level in 3rd grade probably have a learning disability! Disabilities like dyslexia can NOT be fixed by flunking them in third grade. This disability is usually inherited and has to do with the way the brain functions and has NOTHING to do with their intelligence. Most are average and many are above average in intelligence, like Thomas Edison. However, flunking kids does lead to them being over-age, and that is one of the indicators leading to dropouts. Stop Susana and Scandera. They are really bad for New Mexico children.
