Of candle sticks and Corruptions As a young boy I once overheard my grand father, who was very highly placed in the services of the Maharaja and also later on with the independent indian govt and a feudal lord himself, saying "corruption is an age old phenomenon even if one examine our two great epic -the Mahabharat And Ramayan -they are basically stories of Corruption." My respect for the epic or the writer, whom I respect to the highest order for their imagination and value system-which withstood the test of time for thousands of years and will withstand till the end of time- has not diminished in any way.In fact it is growing day by day as I am growing older. Stray cases of Corruption was there,Is there and will be there. In the older days or even in days of the epic the same was confined to the top.It never percolated down to the general or public life.public life in those days were of the highest order with high moral value, integrity and what not. That is why the leadership or the conduct of common men were exemplary. corruption was never all pervasive and universal. Today the reverse is true and it is the most worrying part of Corruption.A old saying says"a leader basically shows what kind of follower he/she has ". The solution does not lie with any personality or legislation because ultimately the implementation of any legislation is dependent on the people manning it. So any lighting of candels showing solidarity or change of guard or even legislation has no meaning till we change ourselves or in our thinking process . Years ago I had read one Poem by somebody-I donot remember the Exact wordings but in any case it is relevant and it goes something like this :- "when I was a young boy I was a revolutionary I wanted to change the world When I grew older I thought I Must change my sorroundings When I crossed middle age I thought I must change my family When I become an old man now I think alas!! what a fool I was instead of trying to change everybody I should have changed myself. So, begining with self is the call of the hour
