Of course I went to University and received a degree. and I did - TopicsExpress

Of course I went to University and received a degree. and I did not receive a degree by being the best at anything (not really sure how one is the best poet). I received it by exercising a degree of tolerance and agreeing to submit what was required for the paper. But what I gained from University of Pennsylvania is not a piece of paper. I was transported to a far away culture, away from my base and challenged to confront my nature, my self, my history, my roots. University taught me that my roots are forever in my blood and my personal history, not in any particular classroom. University taught me the difference between education and training. University taught me how to reflect the energy of a crowd of 60,000 back at them. University taught me the feeling of being part of a community with a common focus and fascination. University taught me that the power of a protest march of two thousand people in defiance of police corruption was not about the message but how the message united us in our collected consciousness. University taught me about the possibility of my connection to all living things. University taught me how being poor feels. University taught me about the lies and pretensions of the elite classes and how the status quo is formed within the game of privilege, opportunity and deception. University taught me how to survive a broken heart. University taught me that trusting everyone has risks. University taught me many things...the least of which was from any book or classroom.
